Why Does My Sliding Door Keep Coming Off the Track?

Doors do not jump — they are thrown
A sliding panel sits on its rail by gravity, guided at the top by a head channel. For it to derail, something has to push a wheel off the rail or let the panel sway far enough to climb out. If it has happened more than once, that something is still there — re-seating the panel without fixing it just schedules the next derailment.
Cause 1: A collapsing roller
The most common repeat-offender. A corroded roller's wheel wobbles on its worn bearing, or the spring-loaded housing loses tension, and the corner of the panel drops beside the rail instead of riding on it. Often you can hear it coming — grinding and clunking for weeks before the first derailment. New rollers end it.
Cause 2: A worn or dented rail
A rail worn sharp or locally dented gives the wheel a ramp to climb out on, usually at the same spot every time. If your door always jumps in the same six inches of travel, inspect that stretch of rail. Dressing the damage — or capping a badly worn rail — removes the launch ramp.
Cause 3: Missing or broken head guides
The plastic guides in the top channel keep the panel from swaying. They crack and fall out with age (look for small plastic pieces in the top track), and without them a firm shove or gust rocks the panel enough to lift a wheel. Cheap parts, big effect — replacing them restores the geometry that keeps wheels seated.
Cause 4: Track debris and screen-door special cases
A pebble or toy in the channel acts as a ramp under a wheel. And sliding screen doors — the lightest panels with the smallest spring rollers — derail constantly once those rollers lose tension; fresh screen rollers with correct tension is the whole cure.
